At one point it looked like Newcastle could be relegated, but now Toon fans are dreaming of an incredibly bright future.
It’s been a wild 2022 for the Magpies, who moved from the bottom three to within two points of the top half.
Eddie Howe has done a sensational job, and will be planning the improvements he wants to make this summer.
But while Newcastle avoided the drop, Burnley, Norwich and Watford weren’t as fortunate. They’ll be playing in the Championship next season, and could end up losing some of their best players when the transfer window opens.
With that in mind, here are seven relegated players Newcastle could sign this summer
With all due respect to Norwich, their squad isn’t littered with Premier League talent. Therefore, we’ve only picked one Canary who the Magpies could target this summer.
That’s Max Aarons, who has been heavily linked with Barcelona and Bayern Munich over the last 12 months. He’s incredibly highly rated, and perhaps could thrive where former teammate Jamal Lewis has struggled.
He could be a long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier, who will undoubtedly be Newcastle’s main right-back next season.
Newcastle know all about the Ivory Coast international, as he scored against Howe’s side in the final game of the season. However, it wasn’t enough to keep Burnley in the Premier League.
Maxwel Cornet has been one of few players to shine at Turf Moor this season, excelling after his 2021 move from Lyon. He scored nine goals, which is more than our top scorer Callum Wilson.
The 25-year-old left winger is available for £17.5million, and could be an astute signing for Howe as he looks to add more goals to his team.
Another forward Newcastle could look at his Emmanuel Dennis. He was tentatively linked with the Magpies back in 2020, and has proved this season he can score goals in the Premier League.
The Watford ace scored 10 goals and provided six assists, which is more than any Toon player in both department.
Dennis has been exceptional for Watford, and seems destined for a move elsewhere with the Hornets wanting £20million.
Howe wants to sign a wide player this summer, and Dwight McNeil would certainly be an underrated option.
He hasn’t been as good as usual this season for Burnley, but is still a promising talent.
The 22-year-old is an old school winger, and his crossing ability could help get more out of the struggling Chris Wood.
Newcastle are in the market for a goalkeeper, but are surprisingly yet to be linked with Nick Pope.
He’s still one of the best stoppers in the country despite relegation, and deserves to remain in the top flight. His heroics won Burnley so many points this season, and they’d have been even further away from survival without the eight-time England international.
Newcastle are looking to sign a wide midfielder this summer. And they’ve been heavily linked with Watford’s Ismaila Sarr.
The Magpies could have a devastating attack with Allan Saint-Maximin on one flank and Sarr on the other. However, a reported price tag of £40million might put Howe and co off a move.
He’s the last name on this list, but probably the most likely to move to St James’ Park.
James Tarkowski has been linked with Newcastle since October, and is set to become a free agent. He’s still a target for the Toon, and would add Premier League experience to an improving backline.
He’s been a leader for Burnley, and could fulfil a similar role in a black and white shirt.
