£17.5m winger suffers relegation, Newcastle should now go and sign him - opinion

Maxwel Cornet could well be off this summer after Newcastle United’s 2-1 win against Burnley helped secure their relegation to the Championship. Co-owner Jamie Reuben even sent a message of condolence to the club.

The Clarets will look to offload a number of players in the coming months to offset the financial damage of relegation.

James Tarkowski’s contract ends this summer and the Toon have been interested in him. West Ham has removed interest in him as they believe Newcastle are ‘definitely’ signing him.

With Burnley relegated, Cornet’s release clause is £17.5 million according to The Athletic. Newcastle should sign Cornet, the Magpies need to bolster their attacking options. He’s been one of the Clarets’ standout players since he arrived at the start of the season. He even netted for Burnley this past weekend against the Toon.

Additonally, the Ivorian is versatile. He arrived as a left-back but has proven to be more effective on the wing. This would make him a valuable asset to the team. It makes him a logical choice to be a Newcastle transfer target.

Cornet would be an improvement on most of Newcastle’s wingers

Aside from Allan Saint-Maximin, Cornet is an improvement on their current wingers. Ryan Fraser, Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron have shown glimpses of quality but not enough to be consistent starters.

Fraser has been the best of the trio but has had off and on injuries. Eddie Howe may well offload Murphy and Almiron this summer. So Newcastle should sign Cornet to give them more options on the wing.

Despite the fact they both tend to play on the left, you could always move Saint-Maximin to the right side. Alternatively, Howe could look to try Cornet in that position too.

Furthermore, Newcastle will probably be careful when it comes to heavy spending this summer. They won’t want to risk breaching Financial Fair Play. With the price set at £17.5 million, Cornet’s release clause could be very attractive to the Magpies.

With a season of Premier League football under his belt and a fairly low release clause, Cornet should definitely be a Newcastle transfer target this summer. Other clubs will be sniffing around him too, but the Magpies boast the financial wealth and a long term project to compete with any side.
