Newcastle United look set to endure an extremely busy end to the summer transfer window.

Not only is it vital that Newcastle United make some new signings, it is also vital that some players leave the club.

There are fringe players that need to secure moves away, such as Ryan Fraser and Isaac Hayden. Elsewhere, there are youngsters like Garang Kuol and Alex Murphy who could leave St James’ Park on loan in a bid to further their development.

But there could also be major departures, one of which suddenly looks increasingly likely.

Newcastle United make new captain decision

Newcastle United have made a couple of changes to their leadership group for the 2024/25 season.

Bruno Guimaraes and Jacob Murphy are now part of the group, with the former getting even more responsibility.

According to the Daily Mail, Bruno Guimaraes is Newcastle United’s new team captain, while Jamaal Lascelles is the club captain.

Eddie Howe hopes that being captain well help Bruno get even better, while Kieran Trippier will continue in his role as vice-captain.

That is a role he has had ever since his £12million arrival at St James’ Park, wearing the armband whenever he has featured and Lascelles has been absent.

It is an interesting change, and one that could really take Bruno’s game to another level on Tyneside.

However, the decision may also provide a fresh hint over Kieran Trippier’s Newcastle United future.

Kieran Trippier has been linked with leaving Newcastle United

Bruno being named captain raises further questions over Trippier’s future.

If the 33-year-old was definitely staying at St James’ Park, you would like to think that Eddie Howe would stick with what has worked over the past few years by having Trippier lead the team when Lascelles is unavailable.

But now it will be Bruno leading the team, whether Trippier is involved in not. It is a very interesting change, and one that may hint that the England international’s future lies away from Newcastle United.

It was reported earlier this summer that Trippier will probably leave Newcastle, but a departure is yet to become a reality. The clock is ticking, with just over a week to go before the summer transfer window closes.

It remains to be seen where the right-back could go. Trippier has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, and that is certainly a possibility. And there is less rush to do that deal, as the Saudi Pro League transfer window is open until October 6th.

Trippier was recently linked with West Ham, but their deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka will have ended the Hammers’ interest in Newcastle’s number two.

If Trippier does stay at Newcastle, he will not be captain as long as Bruno is in the team. While it is great news for Bruno, it is a major shock, and is perhaps a hint towards Trippier’s time on Tyneside coming to an end.
