What Kieran Trippier was doing to Eddie Howe after Luton scored their third goal on Saturday

Newcastle United struggled to contain Luton Town on Saturday, shipping four goals against the newly promoted side.

Luckily, Newcastle were able to get four of their own to rescue a point, despite this being a game that the Magpies should have won on paper.

But Luton Town were better in a lot of departments, and gave Eddie Howe‘s side a real scare at St James’ Park. Their scariest player was Chiedozie Ogbene, who terrified the life out of 31-year-old defender Dan Burn.

The Newcastle United left-back could not cope with Ogbene’s speed, and ended up conceding a penalty after fouling the Luton winger in the box.

This led to Carlton Morris scoring from the spot to make it 3-2, while it also resulted in Kieran Trippier calling on the Newcastle bench to make a change.

Kieran Trippier told Newcastle to make a change

That is according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who has spoke on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne about what Trippier did following Luton’s third goal.

“I think they were readying Tino Livramento at that stage [at 3-2],” he said.

I think they had made the decision. But Kieran Trippier was even signalling to the bench to suggest that a change needed to be made because it wasn’t quite working. On the field, I think they’d realised the problem they had there.”

Newcastle substitutes did not come until the fourth goal

Luton’s third goal came in the 59th minute, then they were at it again in the 62nd. A counter-attack allowed Elijah Adebayo to make it 4-2, and it was at this moment Newcastle made their changes.

Dan Burn was finally brought off in favour of Tino Livramento, while we also got the return of Harvey Barnes. He went on to score the Magpies’ equaliser, on what was his first Toon appearance since September.

Swapping Burn for Livramento should have happened much sooner. It was clear that Burn was struggling, and it was hurting Newcastle. Trippier recognised that, and called on Eddie Howe to make a change.

That change did come, but only after Luton scored again. It was a tactical blunder to leave Burn on for so long, and one that nearly resulted in an embarrassing defeat.
