It has been a six months to forget since Jonjo Shelvey left Newcastle United.

The midfielder waved an emotional goodbye to the Geordie faithful back in January. As the Magpies closed in on reaching the Carabao Cup final, Shelvey was being serenaded by the St James’ Park crowd.

He was off to Nottingham Forest, leaving Newcastle at what was an incredibly exciting time for the club. The Champions League push was on, while Wembley awaited.

But Shelvey decided to leave, securing a longer contract at the City Ground. It was the right decision for his family, but a decision that has not gone to plan.

After just eight appearances, Shelvey had a fallout with manager Steve Cooper. The midfielder reacted angrily after Cooper told him he would not be involved in Forest’s trip to Liverpool back in April. Shelvey was not in the squad, with the Forest boss unhappy with how the 31-year-old was performing in training.

Since then, Shelvey has not played a single minute. There is speculation that he could leave the City Ground after just half a season.

Jonjo Shelvey and Steve Cooper are now ‘civil’

According to the Athletic, Shelvey and Cooper now have a civil relationship after their falling out. That is a step in the right direction for the former England midfielder.

However, the report adds that the midfielder is still in a group of players who have been told to find a new club ahead of next season.

When he joined Forest, he was brought in for his leadership skills and relegation battle experience. Those qualities did not come to the fore. Shelvey fell out with the manager quickly, while Forest survived without him.

Now he could be on the move again, while Newcastle prepare to compete in the Champions League – and are in need of another midfielder ahead of the new season. You have to wonder if Shelvey now regrets his decision to say goodbye to Tyneside.
