Jonjo Shelvey is on the brink of joining Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United, but will hopefully return to St James’ Park tonight.

That is according to Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett, who has provided an update on the 30-year-old’s situation.

Shelvey is currently finalising a deal to join Steve Cooper’s side, and has been pictured at Forest’s training ground. He will sign a two-and-a-half year deal there, ending his seven year spell as a Newcastle player.

His decision to leave has came as a real shock to the Magpies, and has left the club scrambling to find a replacement. However, that is proving to be incredibly difficult.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe is preparing his players for tonight’s pivotal Carabao Cup semi final second leg against Southampton. His side are 90 minutes away from Wembley, and it is set to be a special atmosphere inside St James’ Park.

New signings Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby will not feature, but they will be at the game. And so will Shelvey – if all goes to plan.

Jonjo Shelvey plans to be at Newcastle game tonight

Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett believes that Shelvey is going to travel back to the North East as soon as his transfer is completed.

“We fully expect that Jonjo Shelvey will head back up to Newcastle for that big cup semi-final tonight, to say goodbye to his teammates and the staff at Newcastle,” Dorsett said.

“He won’t do so until he’s certain this deal with Forest is signed and sealed.”

If all goes to plan tonight, Newcastle players, staff and fans will begin to prepare for the Carabao Cup final on February 26th.

The atmosphere should be really special, and Shelvey will be desperate to witness it. It will be a chance for him to say his goodbyes too, having been at the club since January 2016.

It is a real shame that he is going to leave, especially with Newcastle on the brink of success.

But Shelvey has made what he thinks is the best decision for his career, despite the Magpies being 90 minutes away from a domestic cup final.

The midfielder will be at St James’ Park tonight if his transfer is completed in time, and hopefully he witnesses the perfect sendoff.
