Things go from bad to worse for Jonjo Shelvey after Newcastle exit

Not a lot has gone right for Jonjo Shelvey since he left Newcastle United for Nottingham Forest in January.

Shelvey signed for Forest for a nominal fee, with his Newcastle contract due to expire in the summer. Despite the incredible season the Magpies were having, he decided to opt for the safer option.

A move to the City Ground guaranteed him a longer contract, which was important at the age of 31. Eddie Howe did not want to sell him, and admitted that the decision was out of his hands. He received a warm send off from the St James’ Park crowd, as well as a kind message from former midfield partner Isaac Hayden.

However, it is a move that is turning out to be a disaster. Forest currently look incredibly likely to go down, Shelvey has really struggled to make an impression, and now it is unclear when he will play for them again.

Jonjo Shelvey told to stay at home by Steve Cooper

According to the Telegraph, Shelvey was told to stay at home by Steve Cooper rather than travel with the squad to Liverpool at the weekend. This was because the midfielder reacted angrily to finding out that he would not be starting at Anfield.

The report also adds that Shelvey had performed poorly in training, with Cooper unhappy with his performance.

With six games to go, it is unclear when the former England international will return to the side. Forest’s next game is against Brighton on Wednesday night.

Newcastle exit not going to plan

It is understandable why Shelvey chose to leave Newcastle, but his move away is not going to plan so far.

There is a very real possibility that he could become a Championship player again – having left a club that is heading towards the Champions League.

Newcastle have played in a cup final at Wembley and are still in the mix for the top four since Shelvey departed, while he is currently out of favour at the team that sits second bottom in the Premier League.

His reaction to being benched is disappointing, and something that would not have gone down well with Howe at Newcastle.

While the decision to let him go left us light in midfield, many will feel like the club made the right call following this story.
