A new striker could well be on the cards for Newcastle United.

While Alexander Isak looks set to stay as Newcastle’s leading marksman for years to come, the options behind him don’t look totally convincing.

Callum Wilson, after all, will soon be 32 and already has a worrisome injury record. In fact, the club could reportedly even dispense of his services relatively soon.

As such, they have been linked with one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards in the form of Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface.

Still, they may find it difficult to sign him.

Victor Boniface: Newcastle transfer news

According to The Sun, Premier League rivals West Ham are prepared to break their transfer record in order to sign the Nigerian.

It is claimed that the east London club are pushing to get a deal done before the end of the January transfer window, with the German outfit reportedly willing to cash in before finding a replacement of their own.

Victor Boniface: Newcastle transfer blow

At 23, Boniface is already impressing in one of Europe’s very top leagues, having already scored ten times in 16 Bundesliga appearances.

Clearly a player with a lot of upside, it makes sense as to why Newcastle would be interested, particularly with Wilson surely coming towards the end.

Still, as has seemingly been the case for a lot of this window, FFP problems could prove to be Newcastle’s undoing.

West Ham are presumably flush with cash following the sale of Declan Rice last summer and look in a much better position to strike a deal with the German league leaders.

Sadly for Newcastle, that just doesn’t look like the financial landscape they are currently able to operate in.

If West Ham are ready to pay big, Bonfiace might be a target that passes Newcastle by.
