Newcastle United almost recorded a famous victory against Manchester City on Saturday, but the night ended in heartache.
Despite boasting a 2-1 lead for a long time, Newcastle were stung in stoppage time. Oscar Bobb netted a late winner for Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola and his staff celebrated wildly.
It was an agonising defeat for Newcastle, who had done so well to come from behind after Bernardo Silva’s opener.
But Kevin De Bruyne’s arrival changed the game, and Eddie Howe’s side were unable to deal with the Belgian playmaker. He scored and got an assist on his Premier League return, while Newcastle suffered a sixth league defeat in seven games.
There was a lot of disappointment from Toon fans after the game, as tiredness stopped the Magpies from chasing a third goal. They looked to play on the counter but were suffocated by Man City, while it was not a tactical decision to sit back and protect their lead.
Regardless, they did not protect it anyway and got zero points, but Toon striker Callum Wilson actually believes Newcastle deserved all three.
Callum Wilson thinks Newcastle deserved to win against Man City
Wilson has spoke about Newcastle loss to Manchester City on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast, and admitted he was really impressed with the Magpies’ performance.
“It wasn’t a case of sitting behind the ball and soaking up the pressure for the last 20 minutes at 2-2,” he said.
“We felt like we should have got more out of the game. I think we played well. We deserved to win.
“We went for it, went toe-to-toe with them, and unfortunately came out a bit more bruised than the other. We lost the game but it is what it is.”

Hard to agree with Callum Wilson’s stance
I am not sure if I agree with Wilson, who missed the game due to injury but could return before the end of January.
Yes, it was harsh to lose so late in the game after playing so well, but I think it is a stretch to say that we deserved to win. Manchester City also played brilliantly, and would have been disappointed to draw had they not snatched that stoppage time winner.
But Newcastle certainly did play well. The frustrating thing is that it could have been so much better if we had some options to bring on off the bench. We had Lewis Hall coming on to play out of position, while De Bruyne was part of the Man City cavalry.
With a full squad, Newcastle probably could have won that game. But they were without so many key players, such as Wilson, and sadly just did not have enough to hold on.
