Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has sent a message to the players after a devastating loss to Man City on Saturday afternoon.

Having worked so hard to take the lead against the best team in the world and then to defend that lead in the second half, Newcastle were devastated to have lost the game so late on.

After the defeat, Ghodoussi posted on his Instagram story to offer a message of support to the players and motivate them to come back even stronger after the two week break.

Ghodoussi says Newcastle will be back stronger

Although Eddie Howe has already made it clear that he would rather play another game quickly to get this result behind him, this two-week break has come at a good time for the team.

With Tino Livramento missing through illness against City, Newcastle were without 10 first-team players on Saturday with most of those being midfielders or attackers and really limiting Howe’s options on the bench.

The only substitute Newcastle made yesterday was Lewis Hall coming on in the 84th minute for Anthony Gordon which just shows you the lack of depth that the head coach is having to deal with.

Not only will this two-week break allow the players to rest up and come back to their best, but it gives some time for those out injured to come back into the team for the second half of the season as they look to make a big push in the Premier League and FA Cup.

On Instagram, Ghodoussi said: “Great performance from the boys, super proud of them, just wasn’t our night. We rest and come back stronger.”

Newcastle can’t afford not to spend in January

Newcastle have been told time and time again that FFP rules are limiting how much they are allowed to spend this month because they have spent a lot in the last four windows to push the team on.

But with all the injuries piling up, Newcastle simply don’t have the squad depth right now to compete at the top of the league and they are quickly starting to slip down the table after yesterday’s defeat to City.

Even the addition of Kalvin Phillips on loan would be a welcome sight for the supporters who are desperate for some fresh legs and a more defensive midfielder, but even that move looks to be up in the air at the moment because of the loan fee.
