22-year-old Newcastle man admits he’s ‘desperate’ for time off as Premier League winter break begins

It’s been a long and arduous season for Newcastle United who will now get a two week break after a last-minute defeat to Man City yesterday.

For Eddie Howe this probably comes at the worst time as he looks to get back to winning ways in the Premier League, but his players look like they are desperate for some time off.

Speaking to NUFCTV after the game, Anthony Gordon claimed that he was very keen to spend some time away from football after such an intense season, but will be making sure to keep fit.

Gordon is ‘desperate’ for a break

For Gordon in particular this season has been incredibly difficult when you consider the sheer amount of football that he’s played, he’s in real need of a rest now.

In a season which has been plagued by injuries, Gordon has managed to avoid any serious knocks which means he’s played as much football as he physically can across all competitions.

The 22-year-old didn’t even get the summer off as he was away with England for the Under-21s Euros which he used as his pre-season but returned to Newcastle almost immediately.

With so many difficult draws in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, Howe hasn’t had the chance to rotate his squad and because Gordon has been the star man in the attack he hasn’t been afforded a rest all season.

After the game, Gordon said: “I’m desperate I’m not going to lie, I can’t wait. I can’t remember when we had full days off, it’s been a long season but now we get a break so I’m going to enjoy it.

“I’ll say I’ll probably have a break but I’ll probably be in training because I don’t want to come back unfit. So it won’t be too much of a break but it’s more of a mental relief, getting away from football and spending time with family.”

Gordon set for an unbelievable season for Newcastle

Having already recorded 14 goals and assists in his first 20 Premier League games this season, Gordon is on track to have a pretty incredible season in a black and white shirt.

The 22-year-old has arguably been the most effective and important player in the team, particularly when it comes to how reliable he’s been for Howe.

If Newcastle are going to achieve anything in terms of European qualification then Gordon is going to be absolutely key to that, and any injury would be a huge blow to the team, maybe the biggest of the season.
