‘To be honest’: Bruno Guimaraes shares what he found ‘strange’ in Newcastle’s first CL game

With Newcastle United’s second Champions League game of the season on the horizon, Bruno Guimaraes has been reflecting on the draw with AC Milan.

The Magpies kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 0-0 draw inside the San Siro, in a game that was described as the worst in the competition’s history.

That was a crazy statement from Arturo Vidal, but it was a game that saw Newcastle do a lot of defending. Eddie Howe’s side battled for their lives, then nearly robbed it at the end. However, Sean Longstaff’s effort was tipped over the bar to deny Newcastle victory.

But that was our only chance on what was a difficult night for the Toon attackers.

It was not a vintage performance from the Magpies, and now Bruno has looked at where they went wrong at the San Siro.

Bruno Guimaraes thinks Newcastle were ‘scared’ against AC Milan

In an interview with GQ Magazine, Bruno was asked about the 0-0 draw with AC Milan last month.

“To be honest, it was strange,” he said.

“For the first 20 minutes, the team was scared. Everyone was anxious. I think it’s a normal thing in life. But the experience was very good for us. After the game, everyone was happy to play for the first time in the Champions League, you know. I was happy for the boys.

“I think the next game against PSG, everyone will be a bit more relaxed.”

Now Newcastle have Champions League experience

It was a strange performance from Newcastle. A lot of players looked stunned by the grand stage of the Champions League, while AC Milan were much more comfortable in their surroundings.

Luckily, we were able to hold on and valiantly win a point. The experience of that game should ease the nerves against Paris Saint-Germain, who are our opponents on Wednesday.

It will be Newcastle’s first home game in the Champions League for 20 years, but it should be an occasion filled with excitement rather than nerves.

The atmosphere is going to be electric, and it should give the Toon players an extra 10%. That is the hope, and in a perfect world it propels Newcastle to victory. That is what Bruno has predicted, and hopefully his teammates share his confidence.
