Jacob Murphy was sensational for Newcastle United in their win against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

It was yet another memorable night with Eddie Howe at the helm of Newcastle United – there may be another one coming in March.

Newcastle’s 2-0 win against Arsenal was perfectly executed from start to finish. The Gunners had their fair share of chances, but Newcastle’s defence shut Mikel Arteta’s side out for a third time this season.

It came as a surprise when Newcastle lined up with a back five following Sven Botman’s reintroduction to the starting XI following a two-game stint out of the squad.

Newcastle missed Joelinton who instead watched on from the touchline in a retro Toon shirt with club legend Alan Shearer’s name and number on the back. Even without the Brazilian brute, Arsenal could not keep up with Newcastle’s intense football.

Arsenal fans were blown away by Alexander Isak’s performance, but it was a gesture from Jacob Murphy that is sure to please Newcastle United fans.

Jacob Murphy recreates Alexander Isak celebration

Murphy picked up his fifth goal in all competitions for Newcastle this season. His 14-goal involvements are his best-ever attacking return since joining the Magpies in 2017.

It is now two goals in as many games for the 29-year-old, having netted in Newcastle’s 2-1 loss to Fulham, his 200th appearance for the club.

Isak scored on the night, but the goal was ruled out for offside shortly after. What cameras did not fully show amid the celebration is that Murphy was doing Isak’s ‘get back’ celebration, which debuted when he Swede scored against Arsenal in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium.

The Magpies were on top form when it came to mocking their opponents on Wednesday night. Newcastle fans chanted about the match ball to Arteta after he bizarrely claimed that they were to blame for their defeat in the first leg.

Newcastle’s social media team doubled down and posted a photo of the ball branding it ‘the culprit’ in response to his comments.

Anthony Gordon mocks Arsenal’s ‘humble’ comments

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon also got on the scoresheet on Wednesday night after capitalising on a loose ball in the second half.

Gordon’s interview was gatecrashed by Bruno Guimaraes, who kissed him on the cheek and told him he ‘loved’ him. The winger has now had a hand in an astonishing 17 goals in 19 games against the ‘big six’ since the beginning of last season – a statistic that could be a huge help for Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

In an interview with Sky Sports after the game, Gordon took the opportunity to deliver another subtle dig to Arsenal who have made ‘stay humble’ their mantra in recent weeks.

“It’s important to stay humble now,” he said.

After a shaky start to the season, Gordon has truly come into his own in the squad and looks capable of delivering what Newcastle fans have been so desperate for, silverware.
