Newcastle United could soon be about to agree a new contract with Bruno Guimaraes.
The midfielder has starred since joining Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022, proving worth every penny of the reported £40m it took to lure him to St James’ Park during a relegation battle.
While Guimaraes’ current deal runs until 2026, the prospect of improved terms has been mooted for a while, with the 25-year-old admitting over the course of the summer that the “doubt” was ongoing in regard to it happening.

Real Madrid have been credited with a long-standing interest in the player, while Chelsea and Liverpool are other teams linked.
TalkSPORT, however, suggest Guimaraes is ready to sign a new extension, albeit with it containing a release clause of around £100m.
Pundit Simon Jordan has also had his say.
Simon Jordan says Bruno Guimaraes might have his head turned
Indeed, speaking on the radio station at 12.53 on Wednesday 3 October, the former Crystal Palace owner said: “They were already under contract for three years, there was no need to do this but clearly there’s a trade-off between what might happen in the summer if the boy’s progress continues, albeit he’s started slightly slower this season, he’s getting back into his groove again.
“If the interest that was there is going to come again, turn his head again, Newcastle have at least a flag in the ground that no one can get him for less.”

Smart thinking from Newcastle
In an ideal world, the idea of Newcastle losing their best players would never come across the radar.
Still, even the top teams have to sell on occasion. Liverpool, after all, allowed Philippe Coutinho to leave for Barcelona before using that money to invest in Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, players who took them to the Champions League and Premier League titles.
To have safeguarded against losing him cheaply, the club know they cannot be low-balled, all while protecting such a key asset’s value.
