Newcastle United have been linked with signing Timo Werner, and he could be available on loan.
The Magpies’ rumoured interest in the forward stemmed from German journalist Christian Falk, who tweeted out the news on Tuesday morning.
This is the second transfer window in a row that Falk has linked Newcastle with Werner, having made the same claim in January.
A move didn’t happen at the start of the year, and it feels unlikely to happen now. But if Werner, who’s represented by the same agency as Fabian Schar, were to move to St James’ Park, would it be permanent or on loan? Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has shared some information on Chelsea’s stance.

What Fabrizio Romano has said on Timo Werner
Romano spoke about Werner on the latest episode of the Here We Go Podcast.
“I mentioned Timo Werner because of this Leipzig attempt with Chelsea trying to offer Timo Werner to Leipzig,” he said.
“Timo Werner is still on the list at Leipzig but also at Juventus. Massimiliano Allegri wants this kind of player – a striker who can play as number nine but also as a winger. Alvaro Morata is the priority but still no agreement with Atletico Madrid.

“So Werner is also a name for Juventus. There are contacts already between Chelsea and Juventus for Timo Werner. And it could be a loan. This is the news, because until a few weeks ago Chelsea were not so open to letting him go on loan. Now it seems to be a serious possibility.”
Loan would impact Newcastle’s Broja pursuit
It sounds like there are some big teams chasing Werner already. RB Leipzig were the team that sold the 26-year-old to Chelsea, while Juventus are looking to sign a new striker. They could offer Werner the chance to wear black and white and play in the Premier League. In contrast, Newcastle can only offer the former.
But a loan deal would appeal to the Magpies more than a permanent switch, simply because of the finances. When Werner joined Chelsea back in 2020, they paid £47.5million for him. It feels unlikely that they will want to make a loss on him, which might put him out of reach for the Toon owners.

In contrast, a loan could be more affordable, although wages would likely still be an issue.
Another problem Newcastle could have if they move for Werner on loan is Armando Broja. We can’t sign two players on loan from the same club, so going for Werner would effectively end our attempts to get Broja. That would be a shock, as he is surely the more attainable of the two.
For now, there is a ‘serious possibility’ that Chelsea could loan out Werner this summer. Whether that’s to Newcastle remains to be seen, but it would be a real surprise.
