Newcastle United want Chelsea forward Timo Werner, according to journalist Christian Falk.
Sport Bild’s Head of Football believes the Magpies are keen to land the Germany international, who has found life tough at Chelsea since his move there in 2020.
Apparently, Werner’s agency, whom Fabian Schar is also a part of, have been in regular contact with Newcastle.
Another forward at St. James’ Park would not go amiss.
Currently, the options are Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Dwight Gayle.
Wilson’s injury record is well documented, while the latter two have struggled to prove themselves in the Premier League.
So far, Werner has made 60 appearances for the Blues and scored 14 goals, as well as tabled 16 assists.
30 contributions in 60 games isn’t too bad a return, but the star has missed a lot of chances during his time in England.
Currently, the former RB Leipzig man is getting games at Stamford Bridge. But the arrival of Romelu Lukaku in the summer means he is not indispensable.
There could be something in this as Werner is German and Bild is a German source.
But it would be a real surprise if Newcastle did make a move for Werner in the next window.
Lukaku may now be on the scene at Chelsea, but Werner has still been getting games. He has made eight appearances so far.
It feels as though Thomas Tuchel is giving him every chance to become a success at the Bridge.
Of course, Newcastle could well offer a big fee for his services which might tempt Chelsea to sell.
But Newcastle’s new owners may be opposed to doing that given he has found life difficult in the Premier League.
