Callum Wilson has reportedly signed a new contract with Newcastle United.

That’s according to the Athletic, who believe that the 30-year-old has put pen to paper on a new deal at St James’ Park.

It was first reported in July that the Magpies would be offering the striker a new deal, with a further update in August stating that he was ready to sign it.

Now it is October, and the Athletic believe that Wilson has now signed a new two-year deal with the club. They state that the contract includes the option to extend it.

That opens up the possibility of Wilson ending his career as a Newcastle United player. Interestingly, he recently said he would be happy to do that.

And Toon fans would be happy for that to happen too given how good he has been in black and white.

Wilson fully deserves new Newcastle contract

When he joined Newcastle in 2020, it seemed like a sensible addition. He arrived for £20million from Bournemouth, tasked with scoring the goals that Joelinton couldn’t.

Wilson immediately made his mark, and proved how much the Magpies had been missing a proper goalscorer. He scored 12 goals in 26 games in his first season, with injury limiting his appearances.

However, he was hindered further last season. The England international only made 18 appearances, scoring eight goals. He’s had problems this time out too, returning on Saturday from a six-week absence.

But when he does play, he scores goals. Wilson is a real poacher and leads the line expertly. He is well worthy of the number nine shirt.

And he is set to continue wearing it for a few more years. And he will be doing so thanks to a pay rise.

The Athletic add that Wilson’s new deal will make him one of the club’s highest earners. That honour currently belongs to Kieran Trippier, who earns around £100,000-a-week at St James’ Park.

Now Wilson has been recognised as one of Newcastle’s most important players. And rightly so.

He is our main goalscorer and our number nine, and it is fantastic to see he will be staying on Tyneside.
