Callum Wilson is reportedly on the brink of putting pen to paper on a new contract with Newcastle United.

That’s according to TalkSPORT, who state that the 30-year-old ready to extend his stay in the North East. They state that negotiations are underway between the player and the club.

It was reported at the end of last season that the Magpies wanted Wilson to sign a new deal, and it looks like that is set to happen.

When Wilson’s current expires

The striker joined Newcastle in 2020, signed by Steve Bruce for £20million from Bournemouth. He signed a four-year deal, meaning his current contract expires in 2024.

With two years left to run, now is the time to decide whether he is going to stay or go. If we kept him on his current deal until next summer, we wouldn’t be able to command as big a fee if we decided to sell him.

But obviously Eddie Howe wants to keep Wilson, which is why the England international is set to extend his stay.

New Newcastle contract is show of faith in Wilson

The fact Newcastle want Wilson to sign a new contract is a real show of faith in the number nine. That’s a testament to his ability given how old he is and the injury record he sadly boasts.

He turned 30 earlier this year, and is yet to play more than 30 games in a season for Newcastle. Last year he only managed 18 Premier League appearances.

But his goal record speaks for itself. Wilson has played 45 times in the Premier League for the Magpies, and has scored 21 goals. That’s almost a goal every other game, which is a record not to be sniffed at.

Howe is a huge fan of Wilson’s, and recently called him ‘one of the best strikers in England‘. That is incredibly high praise.

Newcastle are in the market for a striker this summer, but not for someone to replace Wilson. He is going to be our main striker this season, and for many more once he signs on the dotted line.
