Callum Wilson is reportedly in line for a new Newcastle United contract.
That’s according to the Mirror, who claim the 30-year-old is going to be offered a new deal at St James’ Park.
Wilson is a vital player for the Magpies, despite only joining the club in 2020. He’s endured two injury ridden seasons in the North East, but both have ended with him as the club’s top goal scorer.
No Newcastle player scored more goals than Wilson last season, despite him only playing 18 times in the Premier League. He scored eight goals, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes next behind him with five.
That’s why Eddie Howe is looking for attacking reinforcements, but also why he wants to secure Wilson’s future on Tyneside.
When Callum Wilson’s current contract expires
Wilson was a Steve Bruce signing, joining the club in the summer of 2020. He arrived from Bournemouth for £20million, signing a four-year contract.
We’re halfway through that deal now, meaning Wilson is set to become a free agent in 2024. He will be 32-years-old then, but Newcastle want to guarantee his future for longer.
The Magpies are currently looking to sign players for the future, but they also need to tie down those who are already here that can play a part.
Wilson definitely falls under that category, and can become even more important in black and white in the coming years.
Newcastle right to reward Wilson with a new deal
Newcastle need to ensure they have a strong spine running through the team, and Wilson is certainly a part of that.
He’s been excellent since moving to St James’ Park, even if he has struggled with injuries. He’s a real threat when fit, leading the line expertly.
We saw that at the end of last season with vintage Wilson performances against Arsenal and Burnley. He proved Newcastle don’t need to replace him.
His showings in the final two games of the season certainly impressed Howe, who described the forward as ‘top class‘ following his return.
He’s a goalscorer and a leader too, with Wilson wearing the captain’s armband on multiple occasions since Howe became manager.
The manager loves Wilson, and so do the fans. It will be exciting to see him get a new deal, and hopefully he can remain injury free in the coming months and hopefully years.
If that is the case then Newcastle could be in for an exciting season with Wilson leading the line. If he starts the season well then he will definitely be deserving of a new contract.
