Chris Sutton has revealed how impressed he’s been with Anthony Gordon’s change in form over the last 12 months since joining Newcastle United.

Gordon has been one of if not the most important player for Newcastle this season, especially with all of the injuries they’ve picked up, but it wasn’t always so rosy for the 22-year-old.

Chris Sutton has now claimed on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast that he’s been impressed with how Gordon has managed to turn things around to become a top player for Newcastle.

Gordon got off to a tricky start

There were a lot of raised eyebrows when Newcastle completed the £45m signing of Gordon from Everton especially amongst the supporters who didn’t think he was the right character for the squad.

The winger would only go on to start a handful of games and often didn’t look fit enough, only grabbing his first goal in the final game of the season against Chelsea which was a bit of a nothing game for both sides.

However, as Sutton claims, Gordon has gone away with England Under-21s in the summer and completely turned his form around, looking sharper and fitter now for Newcastle than he ever did at Everton.

Now, it’s about keeping those levels up on a consistent basis an proving to everyone that it’s not just a purple patch but that he’s one of the Premier League’s most threatening wingers.

On the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Sutton said: “It’s a great story Anthony Gordon. A guy who lost his way at Everton, very sour and bitter.

“Things didn’t really go for him at Newcastle in the early days but Eddie Howe saw something in him, saw enough in him and is bearing the fruits of that now. In terms of his confidence, he’s what this team need and want at this moment.”

Newcastle now rely on Gordon

Almost 12 months ago, Gordon depended on Newcastle and Eddie Howe to boost his career and give him the platform he needed to show off his true potential.

Now, it is Newcastle who depend on Gordon’s attacking talents to keep them in the race for the Champions League spots after a significant number of injuries to first-team players.

Sutton claimed it was a great story for Gordon, but it’s one that Newcastle supporters are all too familiar with under Howe with a number of players having been transformed under the former Bournemouth manager.

Howe’s development of these players who had previously been written off or believed to be overrated has been nothing short of incredible and it gives fans a huge boost of confidence in their team and manager.
