Former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew thinks Gareth Southgate needs to pay closer attention to one of Eddie Howe’s forwards ahead of Euro 2024.
Kieran Trippier was the only Newcastle player included in the most recent England squad, much to the surprise of a lot of Toon fans. It had been expected that Anthony Gordon would receive his first ever callup, but that did not happen.
The England snub was a blessing in disguise given Newcastle’s injury woes, but it certainly did not boost Gordon’s hopes of competing at Euro 2024 with the Three Lions.
There has since been talk of him playing for Scotland instead, while pundits have debated whether or not he should be in the Three Lions squad.
Now Alan Pardew has given his verdict, and the former Toon boss thinks Gordon needs to be part of the England group as soon as possible.
Alan Pardew wants Anthony Gordon in the England squad
Pardew has been speaking on TalkSPORT, and was full of praise for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon and his England aspirations.
“I’ve actually got Anthony Gordon as a ‘must take’,” he said.
“I think the way he plays, he could be a good option off the bench. If I was Gareth, I’d get him in the group as soon as this result is over.
“You’ve got Grealish, you’ve got Sterling who’s in great form and you’ve got Rashford. You’ve got lots of lovely options there.
“There’s just something about Gordon and Newcastle at the moment. There’s something exciting about him. I genuinely feel that he could add something to the group.”

Newcastle winger must keep impressing in black and white
Pardew is right about Gordon. He really could be a great option off the bench for Southgate. The 22-year-old has proven himself to be a gamechanger this season, which is what the England boss needs.
Gordon has kicked on so much since his move to Newcastle. He always had talent, but he is now a much more complete player. He can be trusted in big moments, and continues to deliver in a black and white shirt when called upon.
And that is what he must keep doing if he is to get in the England squad. He is already on Southgate’s radar, and will become impossible to ignore if he continues to play at the same level.
Gordon’s time will come, but his priority has to be doing well for Newcastle – and Eddie Howe will be leaning on him a lot as the Magpies prepare for a very busy period of games.
If Gordon can continue to be Newcastle’s main man in attack, he will surely make Southgate’s squad when the next international break comes around.
