Fabian Schar has indicated that he wants a new contract at Premier League high-flyers Newcastle United with his current deal expiring next summer.
As the Switzerland international fizzed a stunning long-range shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma and into the top corner of the Paris Saint-Germain net – the icing on top of a tasty Champions League cake – it was impossible not to be taken aback by just how much things have changed. Not just for Newcastle United as a whole but for their long-serving centre-half too.
Fabian Schar, not so long ago, was part of a team struggling against the tide of relegation under Eddie Howe.

Then there he was, scoring Champions League stunners against the dominant force of French football.
Fabian Schar wants to stay at Newcastle United
“I have never experienced such an atmosphere,” Schar beams, speaking to Blick. “Even before the game, the enormous anticipation could be felt throughout the city.”
After six years at St James’ Park, Schar is in no mood to bring his story to an end either. The former Basel, Hoffenheim and Deportivo la Coruna man will be a free-agent in 2024, although Newcastle do have a 12-month extension clause at their disposal.
“Newcastle is my second home,” the now-31-year-old adds. “(With the) team, coach and club,I feel very comfortable.
“I really enjoy it and I hope that this journey continues.”
Full of praise for the ‘outstanding’ Eddie Howe, the admiration between player and coach is very much mutual. And while Newcastle have spent much of the last few months scouring the market for right-sided centre-halves – the likes of Joachim Andersen identified as potential long-term replacements for the 77-cap Switzerland international – Schar is likely to remain an integral part of Howe’s plans for the foreseeable future.
One of England’s best defensive partnerships

“I do think they compliment each other really well,” Howe said in the spring of his rock-solid Schar and Sven Botman partnership. “We wouldn’t have had that defensive record if they didn’t (play) the amount of games together, but they have a good understanding.
“They’re both very good with the ball, first and foremost, which helps us in terms of building our attacks and being a good attacking unit. Defensively, they’ve really excelled. Aerially, they’ve been very good and been mobile which you have to be with how we play.
“They’ve covered the backline really well in conjunction with the full-backs, who have also been outstanding for us. It’s been a really big team effort from them.”
