Newcastle United set to repeat move that Amanda Staveley fought against in 2023

Newcastle United are set to end the transfer window with no new signings.

Most fans will be happy to see the back end of the winter transfer window after Newcastle United sold Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly without using the money to sign a replacement.

Newcastle will play the rest of the season with a much more depleted squad, including just one out-and-out right-winger in Jacob Murphy.

The 29-year-old is enjoying his best-ever season in black and white but will need to work tirelessly to ensure the Magpies can return to European football after narrowly missing out last season.

There could still be exits before the transfer window closes too, Kieran Trippier has interest from Galatasaray and youngster Garang Kuol could return to Australia on loan.

While Newcastle remain disappointed at a lack of transfer business, comments from previous owner Amanda Staveley could come back to haunt them.

Amanda Staveley’s Newcastle transfer message in 2023

Former Newcastle owner Staveley was a big positive for the club, she was the reason why the club were taken over by the Rueben family and the PIF in the first place.

Staveley left Newcastle in the summer after the club were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh because of lucrative spending in the seasons prior.

While fans were not expecting such heavy spending as they did in the past, there was still a hope that new players would join the club to help Howe’s cause.

When Newcastle signed Anthony Gordon in 2023, the move was documented on the Amazon Prime documentary We Are Newcastle United.

The PIF dug their heels in over Gordon’s £45m price tag which they deemed too high. Staveley made her feelings on the situation clear.

“Eddie is going to think: ‘How am I going to deliver Champions League football for next season?’,” she said.

“I don’t want him pressured. If we can only spend a certain limited amount and we can’t spend beyond, we’re going to have to assume that we’re not going to hit the Champions League next season.”

Newcastle failed to qualify for the Champions League after a lack of investment in the 2024 January window – they are at risk of doing exactly the same after failing to invest in 2025.

Staveley exploring options away from Newcastle

After an emotional departure in the summer, Staveley and Merhdad Ghodoussi look to have moved on and are now eyeing their next business venture.

Staveley wants to buy Tottenham Hotspur and has a number of backers that will help her get a deal over the line.

Ghodoussi was also recently spotted at Tottenham’s stadium, sparking more belief that the pair could be part of a deal for the club.

Recent reports suggest that Staveley is still interested in Tottenham after the club placed a £3.5bn price tag on their heads.

If the deal goes through, it will certainly be odd to see Staveley and Ghodoussi at a different club after everything they have done for Newcastle.
