It has been six months since Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi surprisingly departed Newcastle United.
It came as a big shock to fans when it was announced that Amanda Staveley had left Newcastle. She was the person who led the takeover which finally went through in October 2021 after years of trying to make a deal happen with previous owner Mike Ashley.
Staveley’s departure was a shock to players and club staff alike. The news did not hit many harder than Toon boss Eddie Howe who was close to Staveley. At the time, he felt like he was losing a close ally at the club.
From a fan perspective, Newcastle lost Staveley’s PR expertise and in a way a method of communication to the club’s executives.
Since Staveley and Ghodoussi left, they have been spotted at various Premier League grounds this season. Ghodoussi was spotted at Tottenham Hotspur’s ground sparking rumours that he and Staveley were looking to buy the club.
A report in October suggested that Staveley was interested in buying Tottenham and had backers from the USA and the Middle East to help the deal go through.
A new report has suggested how Staveley now feels about buying the North London club during a time where they are struggling for results.

Staveley’s stance on buying Tottenham
Buying a club in the national capital will cost considerably more than it did to buy Newcastle in 2021. It cost £300m to buy Newcastle, a figure that has surely inflated plenty since then.
According to the Daily Mail, Staveley does retain an interest in buying Tottenham. It states that the club has also talked with Staveley recently.
There is a chance that there will be backers from the east and west involved. But it could be a case where their involvement starts from a minority investment which grows into something much larger over time.
The report suggests that interested parties would need to pay a whopping £3.5bn to buy the club outright.
Staveley’s original stake in Newcastle was small. The PIF became the majority shareholder on the day the takeover went through. In January 2025, they still have their 80% stake.
If the group are to buy Tottenham, there will no doubt be hope that fans will hope there is not a repeat of Staveley’s Newcastle transfer failings which were a catalyst for her departure.
What has changed at Newcastle since Staveley’s exit
While Staveley and Ghodoussi are no longer in the picture at Newcastle, it has not stopped them from keeping a close eye on things from afar.
Staveley congratulated Newcastle after their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg win against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Newcastle are awaiting a decision on stadium plans – an announcement is due in March. The initial feeling was that the PIF wanted to stay at St James’ Park. However, since Staveley left, that has now changed and a new stadium is more favoured by Newcastle bosses.
There has been a suggestion that the Gallowgate End could be expanded, but a new stadium would generate more revenue and have the potential to host multiple sports and concerts.
