Newcastle United will face Sunderland in the Premier League for the first time in nearly a decade next season and here is their record in the fierce fixture.

The 2025-26 season promises big things for Newcastle United as they hope to build upon their Carabao Cup triumph of the previous campaign.

With the trophy duck finally off their backs, Eddie Howe wants to take Newcastle to even greater heights as they return to the Champions League.

The summer transfer window will have to spice up first, with the Magpies desperately in need of new signings after losing out on several top targets.

Nerves are growing, but there’s excitement for the forthcoming campaign, too, especially since Newcastle will get the chance to lock horns with detested rivals Sunderland once again.

The Black Cats returned to the Premier League after an eight-year absence by dramatically coming from behind to win the Play-off final against Sheffield United.

As a result, the Premier League will finally get to see one of its grandest rivalries once again after a near 10-year absence, with the last one taking place in March 2016.

Here is the all-time record between the two sides.

Newcastle United’s record vs Sunderland

The Tyne-Wear derby is one of the oldest in football, after it was first competed on Christmas Eve in 1898.

Newcastle won that first-ever meeting thanks to a brace from Jack Peddie and a goal from Willie Wardrope.

Sunderland hit back with an instant reply when they won 1-0 in the next game and then 4-2 in the third. Newcastle got back to winning ways in the fourth before a 1-1 draw followed.

That’s been the story of the derby ever since, with it being one of the most closely contested in the game.

Of the 156 times the fixture has been played, Newcastle have won 54, Sunderland have claimed 53 victories and 49 have been stalemates.

126 years on from that first meeting and the rivalry is just as potent and fierce as it ever was, which will no doubt lead to two blockbuster contests between them in the top flight.

Newcastle will take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light first, with the game scheduled for the weekend of December 13. The second derby at St. James’ Park is set for the weekend of March 21.

The last time Newcastle United defeated Sunderland in the Premier League

Though it has been a topsy-turvy contest over the years, Newcastle’s recent record in the Tyne-Wear derby is a source of great embarrassment and frustration for supporters.

The Magpies haven’t defeated Sunderland in the Premier League since August 20, 2011, when Ryan Taylor’s second-half strike was the difference.

You have to go even further back to October 31, 2010, for the last time Newcastle got a resounding victory over the Black Cats when they destroyed them 5-1.

Kevin Nolan scored a hat-trick that day, while Shola Ameobi bagged two of his seven goals against them, the most he scored against any side in his career.

Since the 2011 victory, three of the Premier League fixtures were drawn and Sunderland won six derbies in a row. Three of them by a shameful 3-0 scoreline.

Newcastle did at least get back to winning ways when they beat their foes 3-0 in the FA Cup in 2024 – the first meeting in eight years – but will be desperate to finally make amends in the league as well.
