Eddie Howe was delighted with the way his Newcastle United players approached the Manchester United clash.

Newcastle United were considered favourites by most ahead of their trip to Old Trafford to face an out-of-form Manchester United side.

Fans will know best that Newcastle’s worst performances this season have come when they have been expected to win. Alan Shearer questioned Newcastle’s attitude at the start of December but the response from the players has been nothing short of incredible.

A dominant 2-0 win over Manchester United extended Newcastle’s winning streak to five in a row and lifted the Magpies to fifth in the Premier League table.

Alexander Isak was the star of the show once again and he opened the scoring after just four minutes to continue his remarkable scoring streak.

Newcastle United are becoming fast starters in the Premier League

Manchester United simply couldn’t handle the energy and intensity that Newcastle brought to the table on Monday evening.

The Magpies found themselves two goals up after 20 minutes but it could have been a complete thumping with Isak, Sandro Tonali and Dan Burn all coming close to adding to the lead.

Even Man United boss Ruben Amorim admitted Newcastle were the better side on the night.

Starting games quickly has been a recurring theme in recent weeks. In fact, Newcastle have now scored within the first 10 minutes in their past four matches.

Tonali scored early against Brentford in the Carabao Cup clash before Anthony Gordon and Isak scored within the first two minutes in matches against Ipswich Town and Aston Villa.

Eddie Howe praises Newcastle United for starting quickly

Towards the start of the 2024/25 campaign, Newcastle were not starting matches well and found themselves trailing early on to several teams.

In the month of September, Newcastle went behind against Wolves, Fulham and Manchester City in successive matches.

However, Newcastle have cut out that bad habit and instead become quick starters – something that has pleased manager Eddie Howe.

Speaking after the win against Manchester United, Howe said: “To almost break new ground here and win in the manner that we did is really pleasing.

“Early in the season we were on the other end of it by conceding early goals and it makes such a difference [reversing it].

“We gave ourselves mountains to climb at times, particularly on the road, and it is great to reverse it the last few games. Those goals have helped with momentum and confidence and from that point we have never looked back.”
