Newcastle United’s new signing Antonio Cordero was the star of the show as Spain Under-19s beat Romania 3-1 at the Under-19 European Championships.
The Magpies look like they have a real gem on their hands with the 18-year-old, who is set to move to Tyneside officially at the beginning of July.
Newcastle United have done a brilliant job of getting Antonio Cordero to the club for free after an impressive season with Segunda Division side Malaga. The Spaniard ended the season as Malaga’s top scorer and was also up there in the club’s assist totals.
Sporting director Paul Mitchell will take the credit for signing Cordero, though it could be the only signing he makes for Newcastle before his departure at the end of the month. Cordero rejected Barcelona for Newcastle, a sign that Mitchell’s negotiation skills were set to work on Tyneside if he had stayed for longer.
Cordero impressed for Spain Under-19s in their first game of the European Championships, now Newcastle fans have one major concern about him after another brilliant showing on the big stage.

Newcastle United fans think Antonio Cordero will be sold like Yanuba Minteh
Last summer is one Newcastle fans would rather forget. PSR struggles meant that Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, two promising young players, had to be sold to get them out of a PSR black hole.
Minteh was reluctant to leave Newcastle after not playing a single minute under Eddie Howe, but he has thrived since his move to Brighton and has even put two goals past his former club.
Now, Newcastle fans are worried that they will see a repeat of his deal with Cordero, where a promising young winger is sold on for profit without playing a single minute for the club.
Speaking on the social media platform X, Newcastle fans expressed their concerns over his future.
“Last night he scored the first goal, took several free kicks, including the corner assist for the second goal, and was involved in the third goal. He’s not Yamal, but a great kid. If we loan him out, he would soon get sold at a great price, like Minteh.” said one fan, while another added: “Sold to Brighton in 12 months.”
This fan suggested he should not be sent out on loan for his first season, saying: “If he’s the same as Minteh, don’t send him out to loan. Keep him here, and let him get his “Howie Bench season” Then he’ll be ready the following year.”
“Be sold without kicking a ball like minteh so just preparing myself.” said this anxious Newcastle fan.
Another fan added: “One night on from Osula scoring 2, and getting the MOTM too…. Hopefully, we can add a couple more talented youngsters this window.”
“It could be a bit early to call him a star boy. It sounds like he’s had an excellent game, though. I just hope he doesn’t become another Minteh. All journalists seem to say he’s going on loan I just hope he doesn’t do well on loan then get sold. Hope he has a big future at our club.”

Yankuba Minteh’s statistics compared to Newcastle United’s Antonio Cordero
While some fans are keen to see him in the first-team picture next season, Cordero will be loaned out for his first season at Newcastle in a move identical to Minteh’s.
The Gambian spent his first season on loan at Arne Slot’s Feyenoord, where he won the Dutch Cup and helped in their challenge for the Eredivisie title.
| 2024/25 League Statistics | Antonio Cordero | Yankuba Minteh |
| Appearances | 39 | 32 |
| Minutes | 2,087 | 1,844 |
| Goals | 6 | 6 |
| Assists | 6 | 4 |
Cordero has interest from Ajax this summer, so the youngster is taking a very similar career path to Minteh, but fans are hoping that he stays on Tyneside for his second season, unlike Minteh.
Fans will always be left wondering what would have happened if Minteh stayed at Newcastle for the 2024/25 campaign, but now Howe and Newcastle’s staff have the opportunity to make amends for their prior failures with Cordero.
There is currently no confirmation of where he will be loaned to, but it is likely that a deal will be done early.
