An interesting transfer opportunity has presented itself to Newcastle United just weeks before the January window.
After a very underwhelming summer transfer window, Newcastle United fans will be hoping for a more active period over January.
However, there have been contrasting reports on if Newcastle have money to spend in January with the club still struggling to navigate Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Newcastle want to sign a right winger in January and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is a “dream” signing, but the Magpies may not have the funds available to get any big-money deals over the line.
Instead, Newcastle may have to try and sniff out some low-cost deals and one Premier League star in the shape of Evan Ferguson has just become available.

Newcastle interest in Evan Ferguson
Ferguson burst onto the scene at Brighton at just 18 years old and his best performance for the Seagulls to date has come against Newcastle.
Ferguson scored a hat-trick against Newcastle in a 3-1 victory back in September 2023 which prompted comparisons to Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.
After his “destruction” of Newcastle, Shearer said he loves “everything” about Ferguson but transfer links quickly died down after Brighton slapped a £100m asking price on the Irish forward.
However, Ferguson has fallen down the pecking order at Brighton this season after a lengthy ankle injury. He has only played 105 minutes of Premier League football this season and his only goal so far came against Wolves in October.
According to The Telegraph, Ferguson – who is valued at £60m – has been made available for a loan move in January.
Newcastle United fans split on signing Evan Ferguson in January
Newcastle have been linked with several strikers ahead of the January window and Ferguson now could be on the club’s radar.
He was viewed as one of the most exciting young strikers in the Premier League last season but has struggled to get going at Brighton this campaign.
Newcastle fans have flocked to social media to have their say on Ferguson and opinion is well and truly split.
One fan, via X, wrote: “Evan Ferguson on loan is a no brainer for me. Whether Brighton loan him to us or not. But it could potentially make #nufc change formation, and we know Isak can play with a partner as he has a good relationship with Gyorkeres.”
Another supporter was also keen to get a deal over the line, writing: “Ferguson?? Hopefully we’ll get him before Barca or Real grab him first”
However, others were less keen on the deal. One fan posted: “Ferguson as a loan to buy isn’t it, as much as we need to move on from Wilson he is under contract until the end of the season. If we get a RW and/or RCB in January, summer funds should be looking at getting a 6 and/or 10 first. Backup ST shouldn’t be crazy money.”
Another suggested he would rather Newcastle sign transfer target Jonathan David. They wrote: “Ferguson no thanks, rather go get Jonathan David who’s contract is up end of season for cheap in Jan”.
Finally, one supporter via BlueSky posted: “Evan Ferguson available on loan? Loan to buy obligation and the Howe treatment can get his performances back on track”
