Alan Shearer says one player has destroyed Newcastle – and he loves him

One man put Newcastle United to the sword before the international break.

Indeed, Brighton forward Evan Ferguson – who has been linked with a move to Newcastle – bagged a hat-trick as the Seagulls condemned Eddie Howe’s side to a third consecutive defeat.

The Republic of Ireland international has been compared to a certain Alan Shearer, such is the excitement about his potential. A £100m price tag has already been mooted.

Now, Shearer – who knows a thing or two about scoring in games involving Newcastle – has lavished the 18-year-old with praise. He may be one for the future but what Ferguson doing right now is rather impressive to say the least…

Indeed, writing in The Athletic, Shearer was effusive about Ferguson, writing an article titled “What do I love about him? Everything”.

The pundit wrote: “I can’t say I relished his destruction of Newcastle United, my team, the other weekend, except in terms of centre-forward artistry as Ferguson plundered and pestered his way to becoming only the fourth 18-year-old to score a hat-trick in the Premier League era.

“Left foot, right foot, headers, pace, aggression, intuition; there is no obvious weakness to his game, which is only going to get better and better. He has the lot.”

Ferguson should be a Newcastle target going forward

A teenager striker already making waves in the Premier League, Newcastle would be wise to be on Ferguson’s case.

Callum Wilson cannot go on forever, as prolific as he was last season. Already over 30 and having lost his starting berth to Alexander Isak, the England international will need some replacing.

Ferguson may not be particularly easy to sign given reported interest from Manchester City and Brighton’s ability to extract maximum value out of buying clubs but there should be little reason Newcastle aren’t in the race.

Certainly, it’d be poetic to have the ‘next Alan Shearer’ turning out for the Toon…
