Newcastle United fans have reacted to the news that Aston Villa have avoided a PSR breach by using a bizarre method.
The last few transfer windows have been anything but positive for the Magpies, with sustainability and player sales the mantra within the training ground because of their previously troublesome PSR position.
However, those are believed to be words of the past, and Newcastle United are now set to enjoy a transfer window with much more freedom. The Magpies’ PSR problems reached their peak in the 2024 summer transfer window. They were in a £60m black hole due to their excessive spending over the last three years, and needed to sell assets to avoid a points deduction.
In the end, Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh reluctantly left Newcastle to help them balance the books. Both players went on to have fantastic seasons at Nottingham Forest and Brighton, respectively.
In January, Newcastle sold Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United and Lloyd Kelly was loaned to Juventus, with his move being made permanent on Monday. The two deals are believed to have bagged Newcastle around £31m in transfer fees, which shows the benefit of Paul Mitchell’s brilliant negotiation skills.
Aston Villa have their own PSR troubles, but it has been confirmed that they have now been sorted after making up the funds in a rather ridiculous way. Upon hearing the news, Newcastle fans gave a surprise response on social media.

Newcastle United fans react to Aston Villa selling their women’s team to themselves
If you cannot beat them, join them. That appears to be the mantra of Villa who have followed in Chelsea’s footsteps by selling their women’s team to another company which has links to the men’s side.
It is unknown how much Villa have pocketed from the sale, but it appears to be enough to get them out of their PSR hole. Newcastle officials will likely be furious at Villa’s PSR move, but fans have taken a surprise look at it on social media.
Instead of kicking up a major fuss, fans believe Newcastle should follow in their footsteps to move further away from any PSR issues.
“Something we can use in the future our women’s team is now becoming stronger.” said one Newcastle fan on X, while another added: “I can’t understand why NUFC are not jumping on this, sell the women’s team to themselves and cash in.”
This Newcastle fan also believes the club should take advantage of loopholes, saying: “All clubs agreed to not close this avenue, so the likes of Villa and Newcastle need to start stretching their legs. We’ve had to sell every window to be told we’re still close to PSR. Get rid of these rules for a spend cap fixed for all, and we will see who has the best coach, scouts and academies.”
“If everyone else can get away with it why aren’t we doing it?” this Newcastle fan said.
Another fan added: “We should do it too, before it’s stopped.”
Finally, this Newcastle supporter said: “If you can’t beat them, join them.”

Aston Villa may not sell Newcastle United target after fixing PSR problems
Villa have a fantastic squad, full of young talent and experienced players. Before sorting out their PSR problems, it looked like Newcastle could have signed one of them.
Newcastle are linked with Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, who enjoyed a positive campaign in the Premier League and Champions League. After having a £50m price tag slapped on him, it looked like Newcastle were going to shy away from a deal for him.

However, recent reports have stated that Newcastle could buy Ramsey from Villa for just £29m. Despite that, Villa fixing their PSR issues could see head coach Unai Emery reapply that large price tag in an effort to move further away from their troubles and keep a quality young player.
Ramsey would certainly be of use to Newcastle next season, with the 24-year-old able to play in midfield and on the wing. He would be a perfect player to have for a season in Europe, but Eddie Howe may be forced to look elsewhere.
