Newcastle United fans are eager to see their club back in the Champions League after missing out this season.
Missing out on Europe was tough to take for Newcastle United fans and figures inside the club. The 2023/24 campaign was a gruelling one that took a lot out of the players. Despite multiple injuries to key players, Newcastle finished seventh which would have been enough for a spot in the Europa Conference League had it not been for Manchester United’s FA Cup win.
The Magpies would have been one of the favourites to win the tournament if they were in it. Instead, Chelsea looks like the likely winner of the competition.
There is a chance that league position may not be a factor in their return to Europe. Newcastle will face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March and will automatically qualify for the Europa League if they win it.
Additionally, there is still a chance Eddie Howe’s side could win the FA Cup this season – another possible way into European football.
Europe is the requirement for Newcastle. That was the challenge put in place by Darren Eales and sporting director Paul Mitchell at the start of the season – a challenge Howe accepted.
With the Toon boss under pressure to deliver, their chances of returning to Europe’s top competition and earning a lucrative sum of money have just been given a big boost.

Newcastle edge closer to £30m Champions League boost
The Magpies Champions League campaign was certainly memorable, even if it was short-lived. Fans will never forget Newcastle’s historic win against PSG – one of the club’s best-ever wins. Nights against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan were also nights fans won’t forget in a hurry.
There is an eagerness to get back to playing Champions League football next season within the club, in particular the PIF who will be eager to welcome some of the best players in Europe to a stadium for years to come.
Thanks to the UEFA Coefficient rules and performances from teams in other countries, Newcastle’s chances of playing Champions League football have taken a step in the right direction.
Serie A sides AC Milan and Juventus were knocked out following defeats to Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven respectively. Elsewhere, PSG knocked out fellow French side Brest on Wednesday night meaning they only have three sides left across all the European competitions.
| Country | UEFA Coefficient Rankings |
| England | 106.6 |
| Italy | 93.2 |
| Spain | 88.9 |
| Germany | 82.8 |
| France | 69.8 |
As a result of qualifying for the Champions League, Swiss Ramble shared that Newcastle bagged £30m from their appearance. Should they return next season, there is a chance that they could receive even more than that based on performance and the UEFA Coefficient.
Their coefficient points have increased because of their involvement last season. So they will receive a more lucrative payout in comparison to their previous appearance in the competition.
Howe will be increasingly eager to return to the Champions League after Aston Villa replaced Newcastle as the fourth team in the tournament.
Newcastle become more attractive with European football
Early signs suggest that the summer transfer window will be a busy one for Newcastle.
After selling Lloyd Kelly to Juventus and Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United the Magpies should have an extra £25m to spend. The funds would be added onto Newcastle’s £73m PSR boost they are set to receive as a result of the PSR rules staying in place for another season at least.
With the Magpies more likely to spend in the summer, it’s now important that they qualify for some form of European football to attract more players to the North East. It worked last season as Sandro Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan, a club he loved dearly. The Italian has since become one of Newcastle’s most important players.
Mitchell wants young players from abroad to join Newcastle as part of a new transfer strategy he has put in place at the club since joining in 2024 – those young players are bound to be more attracted to playing for a club that is in Europe.
