A new defender may well be on the cards for Newcastle United in the transfer market.

While FFP constraints did not allow Newcastle to strengthen there over the course of the summer, they are somewhat light as things stand.

Jamaal Lascelles has impressed when standing in for Sven Botman but, long-term, surely Eddie Howe cannot go without more additions. Fabian Schar remains a crucial part of the set-up for now but is over 30 himself.

With that in mind, links with a move for Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi make sense.

Proven in the Premier League and a potential right-footed partner for Botman in the years to come, there has been a fresh update in regards to his potential price tag.

Marc Guehi could cost over £50m to sign

Indeed, the South London Press suggest Manchester United have entered the race to sign the 23-year-old.

They suggest the Old Trafford giants are considering a move for the player but any suitor would have to pay a big fee to sign him.

It is claimed that Palace would hold out for more than the £50m they received for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in 2019, which was a club-record sale.

Guei perfect for Newcastle but will not be easy to sign

Guehi looks ideal for Newcastle. Of the age profile PIF have tended to target, he’s experienced in the Premier League and with England yet has still shown a willingness to learn and improve.

Those are the kind of traits obvious in pretty much every signing Howe has made while in charge.

Still, with Guehi of interest in Manchester and also linked with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham, signing him will not be easy.

Newcastle haven’t shown much of a desire to get involved in bidding wars thus far. It remains to be seen if that changes this summer.
