Part of the reason Newcastle United have enjoyed such a rapid-fire rise to the top under Eddie Howe has been because of their work in the transfer market.

Though the work Howe has done on the coaching field with the players he inherited from Steve Bruce deserves a huge amount of respect, the signings made under PIF’s ownership have played an equally important role in transforming Newcastle.

Indeed, they have largely targeted younger players with something to prove, rather than the superstar names the club were linked with upon the initial takeover in October 2021.

Which is why comments from Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi should be music to the ears.

Indeed, the centre-back was tipped as a £50m target for the club over the course of the summer.

With Fabian Schar over 30 and Guehi a potential right-footed partner to Sven Botman at the back long-term, reports linked him with a move to St James’ Park.

Impressing at Palace and making waves in the England set-up, the 23-year-old still concedes there are things he needs to improve on.

“I am very wary of my limitations as a leader I would say. I think I have a lot of qualities, but there is definitely a lot of things that I can get better at and definitely will get better at” he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport at England’s training base.

“I think every day is a learning process, learning from the players around me, learning from coaches and try and improve those leadership qualities every day.”

Exactly the kind of attitude that would make him fit in at Newcastle

Botman, Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali all arrived at Newcastle in their early 20s.

Though promising names, they had proven little in the game before their moves. Under Howe, they’re being coached along their journey under Howe, making something of a perfect marriage.

With Guehi admitting there’s still things to improve on in his career, he seems like the perfect kind of signing for Newcastle. Already boasting obvious quality and with a desire to learn, he looks tailor-made for this project.
