Newcastle transfer news: Toon close to signing Dean Henderson from Manchester United

Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Dean Henderson according to the Manchester Evening News.

The Manchester United goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park, and those rumours are intensifying.

The Magpies are clearly in the market for a new stopper, despite the strong form of Martin Dubravka. Multiple goalkeepers have been linked with Newcastle, including a questionable report about Jordan Pickford.

But it looks Henderson is the one Eddie Howe wants, and he’s been tracking him for a while. The 25-year-old was linked with a move in January, but a deal failed to materialise.

The rumours have continued though, and the Manchester Evening News believe this transfer saga will soon reach a conclusion.

Dean Henderson has been to Newcastle for talks about signing

The MEN claim that Henderson was in Newcastle on Wednesday for talks with the club. They add that a loan deal was discussed, but a permanent deal shouldn’t be ruled out. It’s a move that Eddie Howe certainly approves of, with the Mirror recently claiming he was leading Newcastle’s pursuit.

While not getting him permanently is a bit disappointing, it probably helps us in terms of financial fair play. However, it would be ideal if we can agree a future deal for the England international. A loan with an option to buy could be best for all parties.

Henderson has had a season to forget at Old Trafford. Illness interrupted the start of his campaign, and David de Gea has since gone on to perform brilliantly.

That’s forced Henderson to watch on from the bench, which must be hugely frustrating with the 2022 World Cup on the horizon.

A move to Newcastle could revitalise his international aspirations. However, replacing Dubravka won’t be easy. He’s one of the most experienced players at SJP right now, and he’s been incredibly reliable since joining in 2018.

But Henderson is eight years younger than Dubravka, and could be the Newcastle United number one for the next decade.

If the MEN are correct, Newcastle are on the brink of their first signing of what is set to be a very exciting summer. Getting Henderson would be an excellent start.
