Henderson’s England snub underlines why he needs Newcastle move

Dean Henderson has still been left out of the England squad despite Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone pulling out.

They were two of the goalkeepers who went to Euro 2020, playing second and third fiddle to Jordan Pickford, who had a great tournament.

But Ramsdale was only called up after Henderson pulled out through injury in the summer, after an impressive battle for the Manchester United number one spot with David de Gea.

Johnstone was called in for Ramsdale initially, before pulling out through illness, to be replaced by Fraser Forster who has been hauled in from the cold.

That underlines how far Henderson has fallen down the international pecking order, simply by virtue of not playing much at Old Trafford.

It also highlights why he needs a summer move, with it recently reported that he is Newcastle’s number one summer goalkeeping target.

If Newcastle can pull that off, they would have a goalkeeper who has the talent to be England’s number one if he keeps improving.

His career has stalled this season and of course there is the chance that the new United manager comes in and prefers him to de Gea because he is more proactive and better at kicking.

But de Gea is nailed on for United player of the year and earning a wage which would make him hard to shift so he may need to move on.

That looks the only way to solve his England slump with the World Cup in the winter coming into view, with this latest snub underlining why he needs the move to the north east.
