Newcastle transfer news: Manchester United’s Dean Henderson on radar

Newcastle United are hoping to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson on loan for the remainder of the season before the transfer window closes.

According to the Manchester Evening News, a move has not been finalised, but ‘work is progressing’ on a deal that could see the Magpies cover Henderson’s £110,000-per-week wages and pay a loan fee.

The MEN state that the Toon Army were prepared to sign the England international on a permanent deal if they could have also secured Henderson’s teammate Jesse Lingard on loan.

Top-flight rules state that a Premier League club can only loan one player from another Premier League team.

If PIF do manage to get a loan deal over the line for Henderson, there would be no chance of resurrecting a similar deal for Lingard, which seemingly looks dead following Manchester United’s request for a lucrative survival bonus to be added to the deal.

After pulling out of England’s European Championships squad with a hip injury, Henderson was hoping to steal a march on David de Gea in the quest to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s number one ahead of the new season by reporting for pre-season earlier than expected.

But after struggling with the aftereffects of contracting Covid-19, by the time Henderson was fit enough to return to training, de Gea had recaptured his best form.

With aspirations of earning a place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, Henderson knows he needs game time.

The 24-year-old has not featured in the Premier League so far this season with his only outings coming in the Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham United and the Champions League dead rubber against Young Boys, where he was substituted in the second half so Tom Heaton could make his senior Manchester United debut.

The Geordies have used three goalkeepers in the Premier League so far this season and Henderson would be a fourth.

With a point to prove and eager for game time, Henderson shone during his previous loan spells at Sheffield United.

He would be an upgrade on Newcastle’s current options and bring greater command of the penalty area.

The addition of Dean Henderson could prove to be a shrewd and pivotal one.
