Newcastle United are reportedly trying to sign Timo Werner from Chelsea, but it won’t be easy.

The forward is being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, having endured a less than stellar two years at Stamford Bridge.

Werner arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020, but has failed to become a regular goalscorer in the Premier League. He’s been called a ‘special player‘ by a former coach, but that hasn’t proven to be the case in London.

That has led to speculation that he could leave Chelsea this summer, with Newcastle interested.

It was recently claimed by i News that the Magpies are in pole position to sign the 26-year-old if Chelsea decide to loan him out to another Premier League club.

However, that might not suit the £47.5million man.

Werner would prefer to return to Germany this summer

According to the Athletic, Werner is deemed expendable by Chelsea. They state that Newcastle are interested – but only on loan. There is also the issue of wages, with Werner reportedly earning £275,000-a-week.

Regardless, a Premier League loan might not appeal to the speedster. The Athletic state that he would prefer to return to Germany.

That’s where Werner played his best football, and what earned him a mega money move to the Premier League.

In his final season with Leipzig, Werner scored 34 goals in all competitions. He was prolific for the Red Bull side, averaging more than a goal every other game.

Given his form there, it’s no wonder Werner prefers a return to Germany, especially with the World Cup coming this winter.

If this is the case, it’s a blow for Newcastle, who are struggling to sign attacking reinforcements.

Werner is an interesting target for Eddie Howe given his Chelsea struggles, but he certainly has the talent to be a hit in England. Howe will fancy his chances at getting more out of the striker, having worked wonders with the likes of Joelinton and Emil Krafth.

However, the Toon boss might not get the chance to work with Werner. He would reportedly rather return to Germany than go to Newcastle.

Given what’s happened in his career and what is on the horizon, it’s easy to see why.
