Newcastle United are reportedly leading the race to sign Timo Werner this summer.

That’s according to i News, who claim that the Magpies are in pole position to land the German forward on loan from Chelsea.

When rumours of Werner to Newcastle first emerged, they seemed fanciful. However, it appears that he is a genuine target for Eddie Howe, who is looking for attacking reinforcements.

Newcastle need to sign a winger and a striker. If they can get Werner then they will have someone who can play in both positions.

The 26-year-old looks set to leave Stamford Bridge after a couple of poor years in blue, but Howe will fancy his chances at reviving the Germany international’s career. He’s already done it with so many players he inherited at Newcastle.

Werner could be the next to benefit from Howe’s expertise, particularly if the Magpies try and play on the counterattack. His speed can be devastating, and is a real ‘weapon‘ as Frank Lampard once said.

Chelsea’s number 11 has the tools to be a star in the Premier League, and Newcastle want to give him a chance.

Newcastle want to sign Werner on loan

According to i News, the Magpies are prepared to offer Chelsea a fee to loan forward. They are also willing to pay a portion of his wages.

That could be the stumbling block, with Werner reportedly earning mega bucks at Stamford Bridge. It’s been claimed that he earns £270,000-a-week. Even offering to cover half of that would make him the club’s best paid player.

For now, Newcastle might need to wait and see what Chelsea do. i News add that Thomas Tuchel’s side are waiting to make more signings before letting the Champions League winner leave.

That’s an understandable stance, but doesn’t help Newcastle’s urgent need for forwards. If a better option becomes available, the Magpies might have to take it rather than waiting to see what Chelsea do.

But talk of Newcastle leading the race for Werner is certainly exciting. He would hopefully prove to be a great signing. However, it’s not about how you start but how you finish, so there is still a long way to go before we see him in a Toon shirt.

But the noises are encouraging.
