Reported Newcastle United summer transfer target Jens Cajuste has joined Ligue 1 side Reims from Midtjylland.

The Sweden international was a target for the Magpies a few weeks before the transfer window closed, according to RMC Sport (via GFFN).

The 22-year-old then spoke of his frustration at not managing to seal an exit from the Danish side this summer, after being linked with a move at the time to Newcastle.

Reports in France had even claimed that Newcastle had lodged a £13.5 million bid for the player.

But the defensive midfielder has now joined Reims for £9milllion.

The Toon Army are reportedly interested in Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.

However, Fabrizio Romano has said that Newcastle’s opening bid has been rejected and that a deal is complicated, not least because Reims want a sell-on clause for the teenager.

90Min are reporting that Brentford and Brighton have also made bids for the 19-year-old, but that Newcastle remain favourites.

Newcastle are apparently working on a deal worth around £30million for the youngster who has eight goals and three assists from 17 Ligue 1 games.

Although Newcastle’s opening bid has been knocked back, PIF’s riches mean we should be able to stave off competition from fellow top-flight clubs.

Following the injury to Callum Wilson, Newcastle’s need is far greater than the rest of the chasing pack and that may mean we have to stump and pay the money.

If signing Ekitike proves the difference between staying up or going down, the decision to fork out big money on the youngster will be labelled a masterstoke.

If he did arrive on Tyneside, the youngster would probably benefit from a more experienced striker also being signed this month, which would help alleviate the inevitable expectation and pressure which will be placed on his shoulders.

Newcastle’s pursuit of Ekitike could continue deep into the window, but after signing Cajuste, the French side may be tempted to cash in on their young star if their valuation is met.
