Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke in the January transfer window.

According to the Mail, fears are growing that Callum Wilson could miss the bulk of the season due to a torn calf muscle.

With the Magpies potentially facing a long period without our top goalscorer, PIF and Eddie Howe are seeking attacking reinforcements in the winter window.

The Telegraph claims that Solanke is ‘under consideration’ and that Howe remains a ‘big fan’ of the man he signed from Liverpool for around £19m in January 2019.

With just four goals from his opening 46 games for the Cherries, Solanke struggled to repay the big sum Howe paid to secure his signature.

But after scoring 15 goals and making 12 assists during the 2020/21 campaign, Solanke has already surpassed last season’s goalscoring tally this time around, despite the campaign only being at the halfway stage.

The 24-year-old has 19 goals in all competitions to his name this season. Only Ben Brereton Diaz (20) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (22) have scored more Championship goals than Solanke (18) this season.

However, similar with centre-back Lloyd Kelly, another Newcastle target, the Telegraph claims that Bournemouth will resist any attempt to lure their players away when they are top of the Championship, which reportedly makes progressing things ‘hard to the point of impossible’.

With a contract until 2024 and Bournemouth’s stance on not losing their key players amid their promotion push, it’s hard to see how Newcastle will be able to sign Solanke without forking out a big fee.

Newcastle have also been linked with Premier League strikers Divock Origi and Eddie Nketiah, as well as a move for Norwich’s Todd Cantwell.

Unlike Solanke, all three of the aforementioned trio have entered the last six months of their contracts at their existing clubs, which enhances Newcastle’s chances of being able to negotiate a deal in January.

Newcastle have got the window off to a great start with the imminent confirmation of Kieran Trippier, but paying over the odds for Dominic Solanke, who has four goals from 63 Premier League matches, doesn’t make sense.
