Sean Longstaff is almost certain to start for Newcastle United against Everton on Thursday night, but could have been lining up for the Toffees had things gone differently.
Newcastle will arrive at Goodison Park with a wave of momentum, buoyed by their 6-1 statement win over Tottenham Hotspur.
It was an incredible performance from Eddie Howe‘s side, who were boosted by the return of Sean Longstaff. He was recalled to the starting lineup, and produced a wonderous display to continue his good form.
The 25-year-old’s turnaround has been remarkable, getting better and better as the months go by. He has been on a sensational journey, and one that nearly came to a premature end last year.

When Rafa Benitez was appointed Everton manager, there were rumours that he could try to bring Longstaff to Goodison Park. He gave the midfielder his big break at St James’ Park, and it was reported that the pair remained in contact.
The rumours continued even after Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce, with the local lad struggling to prove his worth to the new manager. And with his contract due to expire that summer, there was speculation that Longstaff could sign for Everton in January 2022.
However, the move was off when Rafa got the sack that month.
Now Longstaff has spoke to the Athletic and shared just how close he was to signing for Everton.
“Sometimes you have to do what’s best for yourself and Rafa gave me my chance at Newcastle and I’d played well for him, so it was natural to have a little look at that,” he said.
“Earlier in the season, I was ready to go. I knew Everton weren’t in the best of form and with Rafa being ex-Liverpool, it was tricky for him, but in my head, I’d probably got to the point of, ‘Right, that’s it, that’s my decision’.
“Sometimes you need a fresh start to go find yourself.”
Lucky escape for Newcastle and Longstaff
Longstaff will look back and think thank goodness he did not sign for Everton. They have been in disarray over the past couple of seasons, and there is surely no way he would have kicked on as a footballer if he had moved to Goodison Park.
It could have been career suicide, but now he is shining at Newcastle again – a key part of a side that is competing for the Champions League.
It has been a lucky escape for Longstaff, who could be preparing to face his boyhood club on Thursday night had things gone differently. But instead he will be starting for Newcastle, as they look to take another huge step towards finishing in the top four.
