Rafa Benitez sacking will surely end Everton interest in Sean Longstaff – opinion

Earlier in the transfer window, Everton reportedly made a bid to sign Sean Longstaff from Newcastle.

The offer was rejected, which is no surprise considering the Daily Mail claimed it was in the region of £1million.

Longstaff became a sub-plot in the Lucas Digne saga. The Frenchman wanted out of Everton because of Rafa Benitez, and Newcastle wanted a left-back.

In the end, Digne got his wish and joined Aston Villa, while Newcastle are still looking for a left-back and Benitez has since been sacked.

Meanwhile, Longstaff remains at St James’ Park with the clock ticking on his current deal.

Will Everton still want Sean Longstaff?

Interest in Longstaff this month is no surprise given his contract situation. The midfielder’s current deal expires in the summer.

That’s why Everton’s offer was so low, even if it was ridiculous.

Newcastle were right to reject it, but it now seems highly unlikely that the Toffees will come in with an improved bid.

That’s because Benitez is no longer in charge at Goodison Park following his dismissal on Sunday. It was a long time coming, with poor results and the negative fan attitude towards the Spaniard creating a poisonous atmosphere.

The ex-Toon boss was the one who gave Longstaff his Premier League debut in 2018, and he played arguably the best football of his career under Benitez’s management.

That’s why Rafa wanted to be reunited. But it’s hard to see Everton maintaining their interest now that Benitez has gone.

Therefore, Longstaff will have to continue to fight for a new deal at St James’ Park, with no other clubs seemingly keen.

The 24-year-old has started the last three games for Newcastle, with varying degrees of success. If he can play like he did in 2019 then we have to keep him, but it’s been a long time since we saw that form.

And with new players linked everyday, perhaps Longstaff is running out of time to prove he deserves to stay.
