Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, but Mehrdad Ghodoussi believes it was not just a win, but a ‘statement’.
It was Newcastle‘s biggest win of the season, yet it was effectively over after 21 minutes. Eddie Howe‘s side were 5-0 up, cruising to victory against their biggest rivals in the race to qualify for the Champions League.
Tottenham were blown away, absolutely powerless against a rampant Toon side that went for the throat in the opening stages. Everything went right, and it resulted in an emphatic victory for the Magpies.
After the referee called time on Tottenham’s humiliation, Ghodoussi was pitch-side to congratulate all of the players. He hugged every player and coach as they exited the St James’ Park pitch, toasting a monumental win on what was a special afternoon for the club.
Mehrdad Ghodoussi believes Newcastle win was a ‘statement’
Ghodoussi then took to Twitter after the game and delivered a passionate message that should serve as a warning to every other club in the Premier League.

He wrote: “This team proved today that anything is possible with passion, perseverance, and a strong team spirit. Their victory was not just a win, it was a statement.”
‘It was a statement’. Those final four words are just as emphatic as the 6-1 victory. And Ghodoussi is right, as Howe’s side laid down yet another marker during a remarkable campaign.
This is still just the first full season since the takeover. It is still just the first full season of Howe’s reign as manager. So much has already been achieved, yet so much more is on the horizon.
You can talk about money and investment all you like, but what Howe did yesterday was special. He did it with plenty of players who have been part of Newcastle teams that have been scrapping for survival – players who did not previously look good enough.
When Jacob Murphy was signed by Rafa Benitez, he looked like a huge waste of money. Now he has just scored a brace in a 6-1 win that could massively help us secure Champions League football.
It is absolutely insane, and the worrying thing for everyone else is that this is just the beginning. Ghodoussi has sent the warning – now it is up to our opponents to work out how to stop us.
