Newcastle insider now says 22-year-old is suddenly more confident and much fitter

The Anthony Gordon that Newcastle United fans are seeing this season is much better than the Anthony Gordon we saw last season.

Newcastle splashed out in January to sign Gordon, who arrived from Everton for £45million. As shown in the Amazon documentary, the club worked really hard to get a deal done, with Amanda Staveley playing a major role.

He was signed with an eye to the future, but still had a role to play between then and the end of the 2022/23 season.

But while the campaign ended with Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League, Gordon had little to no influence. He struggled to get in the side, and did not stand out when he did play.

The winger admitted on the final day of the season that he had found the first few months difficult, hinting that we would see a very different Anthony Gordon when the new season started.

That is exactly what has happened, with the 22-year-old boasting two goals and two assists from Newcastle’s opening six Premier League games. Gordon has been immense, producing his best display in a Toon shirt against Sheffield United on Sunday.

He looks a completely different player, and a new report has shared how he returned for pre-season with a completely different mindset and attitude.

According to the Telegraph, they have been told by a Newcastle source that Gordon was notably more confident and much fitter and sharper when he returned for pre-season in July.

He was helped by the Under-21 Euros, where Gordon was named player of the tournament as he helped England win the competition.

That has acted as a springboard for Gordon, who took his international form into pre-season, and then took his pre-season form into competitive action.

Big things were expected from the Toon number 10 at the start of the campaign, and he is already living up to the hype. While he used to be public enemy number one when he wore Everton blue, Gordon is now a fan favourite when he is running down the wing in black and white.
