Anthony Gordon got his first goal for Newcastle United yesterday and in a post-match interview revealed what shocked him when he joined the Magpies.

It has been, by his own admission, a tough year for Anthony Gordon. The circumstances surrounding his transfer from to Newcastle weren’t exactly the best.

He was literally chased out of Goodison Park and pretty much downed tools to force through his move to Tyneside.

Gordon admitted that he has found it tough at Newcastle

Then after arriving at Newcastle, Gordon found himself a bit out of his depth as he told NUFC TV: “It’s been a difficult year, full year, not just since I’ve been at Newcastle, so it was just really good to get that goal.

“It’s been difficult just because of the level I was at coming in, the lads here are so much higher. I had such an uphill battle to match them and then I had the injury and it always felt like I was chasing. It was hard mentally and physically.

“In this team you’ve got to be so fit, the gaffer demands so much of his players so that’s something I probably didn’t expect or didn’t know but I know for next year so I’ll be on it.”

To be fair to Anthony Gordon, that intensity shocked the Newcastle players when Eddie Howe arrived too. He transformed the squad from the least fit in the league (probably) to a group of top athletes who can run forever.

Gordon has been called up for the England u21’s and is hoping that the additional games and training will help him to keep working on his fitness for next season.

With a good pre-season behind him and now that he knows what’s expected of him, I definitely back Anthony Gordon to make an impact next season. He has the talent and the pace, now he just needs to get up to Eddie Howe’s level.
