In a game where Newcastle United scored eight goals via eight different goal scorers you’d think it would be hard to pick out one man for praise but Anthony Gordon stood out from the pack.
Anthony Gordon wasn’t in the starting line-up for Newcastle yesterday with Eddie Howe opting to rest the 22-year-old after an excellent start to the season.
His replacement, Harvey Barnes will have been looking to play his way into Howe’s thoughts but unfortunately after just ten minutes Barnes was on the deck asking to be subbed with a suspected toe injury.
Gordon was relentless for Newcastle yesterday
On came Gordon who made an almost immediate impact latching on to a Dan Burn throw in, taking the ball to the by-line and somehow (*cough*handball*cough*) keeping the ball in play manages to pull it back for Sean Longstaff to open the scoring.
From there it was just non-stop brilliance from Gordon. He and Callum Wilson could have had a bagful each were it not for some excellent saves from Sheffield United ‘keeper Wes Foderingham.

Gordon did eventually get his goal and it was more than worth the wait. Finding space on the edge of the area and curling a sublime effort into the bottom corner, his was the pick of the bunch.
Shay Given has been very impressed with Gordon this season
On Match of the Day 2 former Newcastle man Shay Given was in the pundit chair and he immediately heaped praise on the £45million signing from Everton, saying: “He was rested after midweek, had a great game at the San Siro put a real shift in, and you talk about Eddie Howe with his squad, and he has to rotate his squad but after 12 minutes Anthony Gordon came off the bench and he had a great game, he had a huge game for Newcastle.

“This season he has been a different player, he has been transformed, and has two goals and two assists already this.”
Gordon has been excellent in every game for Newcastle this season off the back of an outstanding tournament with England U21s where picked up Player of the Tournament while guiding his side to a European Championship win.
