Newcastle chiefs new contract ‘priority’ for first-team star with Alexander Isak talks ongoing

The Newcastle hierarchy have set their attention on contract talks following the disappointing summer transfer window.

The one silver lining to Newcastle United’s summer transfer window was that the club kept hold of their star players.

Bruno Guimaraes was heavily linked to Manchester City with the Premier League champions reportedly weighing up whether to trigger his £100m release clause.

Newcastle kept hold of the Brazilian and handed him the captain’s armband, and they also fended off Liverpool’s interest in Anthony Gordon.

Gordon has since signed a new contract at Newcastle, ending all speculation over his future. Newcastle chiefs are now trying to repeat that trick with Alexander Isak.

Newcastle United in Alexander Isak contract talks

Isak was wanted by Arsenal this summer but the Swedish striker stayed on Tyneside and is contracted until 2028.

However, Newcastle chiefs opened contract talks with Isak and want to tie him down to a bumper deal to fend off Premier League rivals.

Isak currently earns £120,000 per week at Newcastle, but he is set to receive a significant pay rise if he agrees terms on a new contract.

Keeping hold of the 25-year-old striker has understandably become a priority for the club after his excellent 25-goal campaign in 2023/24.

However, while talks over Isak’s contract continue, a new report suggests Newcastle are also prioritising a new contract for teammate Sean Longstaff.

Sean Longstaff contract ‘priority’ for Newcastle chiefs

According to ShieldsGazette, a new contract for first-team midfielder Longstaff is now a “priority”.

They add that the decision to hand the 26-year-old a new contract is “a business decision as well as a footballing one”.

That is because Longstaff’s current Newcastle deal is set to expire at the end of the season, meaning he could leave as a free agent.

The club’s hierarchy are keen to protect Longstaff’s value by offering him a new deal. Academy talents have become particularly valuable under the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules because they add pure profit to a club’s accounts.

Additionally, Eddie Howe is a big admirer of Longstaff and views him as a key player in the first team.
