Alexander Isak has shared what convinced him to join Newcastle United last summer.

It was late in the transfer window but Newcastle added the attacking player they desperately needed last summer when they signed Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad for a club-record £63million.

His performances for Sweden in Euro 2020 had caught the eye of many clubs, but after a tricky spell at Borussia Dortmund, the jury was still out on the youngster.

Isak was impressed with the ambition of the project

Newcastle finally stepped up in 2022 to take that shot that other clubs were reluctant to do and by the end of the season pundits had ran out of superlatives for our £120,000-a-week striker.

Now, in an interview with The Times, the lanky Swede has shared what it was that convinced him to make the move to Tyneside saying: “I thought the project was very interesting, ambitious.

“Then when I spoke to the manager, I felt he knew me well as a player. He explained the qualities he sees in my game and how they’d benefit the team. We had a good understanding.”

A combination of the ambition shown by the club project, which also convinced Bruno Guimaraes to join the club and Eddie Howe sounds like it could convince anyone to join Newcastle right now.

Newcastle’s achievements exceeded Isak’s expectations this season

It seems like Newcastle have exceeded his expectations this season too, as he said: “Yes, if you had asked me before, I’d have been surprised to play in the Champions League,” he says.

“But once I saw how the team played and the quality of the squad, I knew it wasn’t just good form. We’ve shown we can compete with the big teams, so I don’t think we should put any limits on ourselves next season. We can compete to win something because we’ve taken a lot of steps in a short space of time.”

Isak has said that there’s more to come from him next season and it sounds like his ambition and expectations for what the club can achieve will drive him forward in that regard.

There are many reasons for Newcastle fans to be excited about next season and seeing what a fully-integrated Alexander Isak can do is going to be right up there.
