Newcastle United’s injury crisis has opened the door to a number of different players this season.

Indeed, while there was a lot of talk about Lewis Miley during Newcastle’s pre-season tour of the United States, it’s hard to imagine the teenager getting the minutes he has this season were Sandro Tonali and Joe Willock available all year.

Then there’s Jamaal Lascelles.

The defender was something of an outcast last season as Sven Botman and Fabian Schar impressed as Eddie Howe’s first-choice central defensive partnership.

However, even before the injury to Botman that allowed club captain Lascelles back into the side, Howe still took time to publicly praise the defender during the tour of America, underlining just how valued a figure he is behind the scenes.

Now, some more insight into his future has emerged.

Jamaal Lascelles contract news: Newcastle latest

According to The Chronicle, the club remain in talks with player’s representatives behind the scenes.

The 30-year-old is under contract until June of next year and was previously linked with a move away but his return to form has made the club move into action.

The report adds that the former Nottingham Forest youngster is deemed a big part of Howe’s plans going forward.

Jamaal Lascelles: Newcastle captain deserves respect

Schar, Botman and a potential younger signing in the form of someone like Jarrad Branthwaite may be more glamorous options long-term but Lascelles deserves respect.

Hailed as “unbelievable” behind the scenes by teammate Dan Burn, Howe has been full of praise for his captain this season.

245 games into his Newcastle career, Lascelles is surely playing at the highest level he’s managed to date. Perhaps more players will arrive in his position but he has proven he is up for the fight in raising his game.

Should he get a new deal, he’ll have more than earned it.
