Jamaal Lascelles barely played for Newcastle United during the 2022/23 season, and he could now have the chance to leave St James’ Park.

The 29-year-old has fallen down the pecking order since Eddie Howe arrived at Newcastle. He firstly lost his place in the side to Dan Burn, then his minutes were hindered further when Sven Botman joined from Lille.

Lascelles made just 11 appearances last season, with only five of them being starts. Despite his limited involvement, the defender has been praised for his attitude and leadership behind the scenes. He has still been an influential captain despite not being on the pitch.

However, it looks like Lascelles’ time on Tyneside will come to an end at some point in the next 12 months. His contract expires in 2024, and it has been reported that he will not be offered an extension.

Now he could have the chance to leave as early as this summer.

Luton Town interested in signing Jamaal Lascelles

According to the Chronicle, Luton Town are interested in signing Lascelles. They won promotion to the Premier League last month, beating Coventry City in the playoffs to return to the top flight for the first time since 1992. They were relegated from the First Division in the final season before it morphed into the Premier League.

Now they are back in the top division, and looking for reinforcements. And in Lascelles they may have found a very good option.

While he has not played much for Newcastle as of late, he still has a lot of Premier League experience, and has proven over the years that he is good enough to play at this level. At one point in time there were calls for him to get an England callup.

Those days are long gone now, but Lascelles is the type of character who looks like he would really fit in at Luton. But will he want to make the move?

If he goes to the Hatters, he can play regular football and stay in the top flight. But if he remains at Newcastle, he gets to continue being a part of this incredible journey and will experience Champions League football for the first time in his career.

It is an incredibly difficult decision at a vital stage of his career.
